Speaking of patents, this one was actually filed in February of 2010 and the application status was made public during the summer of 2011. It reads as follows...

With the number of cellular phones in use exceeding several billion and repairs typically exceeding $25, the costs of damage and loss of cellular phones amounts to billions of dollars per year.”
It also mentions the technology would activate or deploy the airbags in strategic positions on the device so that the impact would be absorbed by the airbag first, providing a cushion for the device to land. The idea also notes that spring technology could be utilized instead, an expulsion of air, or maybe even a combination of all three. Interesting to say the least...
